Export your 23andMe raw data

Your raw data is the unprocessed genotype file. It is more detailed than the 23andMe reports and is what Whale DNA needs.

Step-by-step

  1. Sign in at you.23andme.com.
  2. Click your profile icon in the top right → Browse Raw Data.
  3. On the Browse Raw Data page, click Download in the top right.
  4. Confirm your identity with the security challenge.
  5. You will receive an email within ~1 hour with a download link.
  6. Download the .zip file (around 6–15 MB).

Which file do I upload?

The file you receive is a .zip. Inside is a single .txt file named something like genome_YourName_v5_Full_YYYYMMDD.txt. You can upload either the.zip or the extracted .txt directly — Whale DNA handles both.

What if I used AncestryDNA or MyHeritage?

Same idea — look for "download raw data" in your account. We support AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, Living DNA, and FTDNA. They all export in the same tab-separated format.

Privacy reminder

This file is the most sensitive data you have. We process it in-memory and delete the raw upload within 24 hours. No third party ever sees it. If you prefer you can anonymize it yourself before uploading — strip the header comments, that's it.
