Genetic data is probabilistic, not deterministic

A genetic variant is a statistical association, not a destiny. Penetrance is usually incomplete. Ethnic background, environment, lifestyle and hundreds of other genes all modify outcomes. Pathogenic classifications in ClinVar can and do change over time.

23andMe-class microarrays have limits

Direct-to-consumer genotyping arrays cover roughly 600 000 common variants. Many rare pathogenic mutations — including most clinically significant BRCA1/2, Lynch syndrome, and cardiomyopathy variants — are not covered. Do not interpret an absence of findings as proof that you do not carry them. If you have personal or family history suggesting a specific condition, consult a board-certified genetic counselor and consider clinical-grade sequencing.

Emergency situations

If you think you may have a medical emergency, call your local emergency number immediately (112 in Europe, 911 in North America). Do not use Whale DNA for any urgent medical issue.
